Sweeping questions
I have wanted to move out to a more rural area lately. A place where maybe my neibhgors cant see every move i make. From the backyard there are 20+ houses that can see what i do, if i smoke, if i drink. IT bothers me to say the least. I do however have a problem with a lot of the conservative types i meet in more rural areas. Im a lot more progressive so im very out of place in the small church in alabama setting. Im not saying i view it as wrong, but it just isnt my personality. Just like many people who talk on here wouldnt want to join a Sierra club meeting (Myself included haha). Are there any area's that you (any of you) know of where its not a high population but the people arent as strict, and judgemental? Even in New mexico i stumbled across that a lot. Im saving right now and can hopefuly move next year but its nice to try and find a place to look into and visit first, thats the mistake i made befor moving to the south east.

In the Northeast:
Pennsylvania...anywhere 20 miles west of Philly to 20 miles east of Pittsburgh. Upstate New York. Delaware |
Re: Sweeping questions
I agree with Johnny99 Pennsylvania or perhaps Ohio. Land is relatively cheap in rural (I would stick to small town rural) areas and people are fairly easy going. I live on 5 acres in NE Ohio, or at least before I left for school, in a small town of 1200 and everyone pretty much does their own thing.

Arcadia Florida.
http://www.city-data.com/city/Arcadia-Florida.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcadia,_Florida Edit - Dude, If you want small town USA you're going to have to realize that most of small town USA is very religious and very conservative. If you want liberal, you might want to try Washington St. or Oregon. |

I just hate how judgemental most of the conservative christians have been in the areas i have lived where (texas and north carolina). New mexico was ok washington was the easiest going (most laid back). I have been all over the place and i have found in area's where people dont have to interact with gay people or people of different religions they dont except them and even grow to dispise them. In larger cities where people see that others are just like them its no where near as bad. |

Re: Sweeping questions
I've been looking for something similar. Found it for a while in Northern Connecticut...8 acres, privacy on all sides. But the awareness of a looming property crash led us to sell out at the high and wait on the sidelines for a while. If we weren't tied to NYC for work, I would consider the Berkshire Mountain area. Beautiful, large properties, laid back tolerant people, towns with libraries even! Prices are pretty soft there these days. Similar situation around Torrington, CT. I have been tempted by a farm in small town South Carolina, but real life stories about clan activity at night put me off. I know the big centres like Columbia aren't like that, but 40 miles outside of town, the story changes. Too risky for an opinionated visible yankee infidel like me.
For what it's worth, we bought a small farm in Nova Scotia, Canada, and I recommend it highly. The people are just wonderful. Most Nova Scotians, even working farmers in smaller poorer areas, are incredibly kind, considerate and tolerant. They listen to the CBC radio, and for some reason are better informed about world affairs then most of my neighbors in Fairfield County. There will always be that smaller town tendency to gossip, but I have not yet sensed anything malicious, whereas my born again neighbors in "upscale" Connecticut went around telling everyone on my street that we were devil worshipping threats, because I had Buddha statues in my house (inherited from my globe trotting pop), and I burned incense. Weird. |
Re: Sweeping questions
I too live in a small city (most of you would call a small town) in northeast Ohio. Religion is important to many people here and some are intolerant of anyone who doesn't believe like thay do. However, most people mind their own business and perfer others to do the same. Most are the volunteer fire department types who are willing to help others if needed. They still know how to grow things and we even have an Amish community not to far away.
